Our trip to the zoo!

We had a fantastic time at Colchester Zoo to kick start our 'Circle of life' unit! We looked around the zoo, paying close attention to the quality of the enclosures. The children thought about the size in relation to the animal, whether it suited them (based on where they were from and their needs), the resources/equipment, whether the animals seemed happy and were behaving as we would expect. After lunch, we had a talk from the education team who explored the arguments for and against zoos. This was really interesting and highlighted lots of things we hadn't considered before.

Of course, we also managed to find enough time for a play on the park!

During Spring term, we have been cooking a variety of savoury dishes in our D&T lessons. We have learnt a lot of skills and have enjoyed preparing different foods!

Fruit Kebabs

We made yummy fruit kebabs, using fruit of our choice!

UPDATE (SUMMER TERM): Our P.E days our now Mondays and Thursdays.

PSHE in Year 5

From September 2020 it will be compulsory for all primary age children to be taught Relationships and Health Education. These subjects are designed to equip your child with knowledge to make informed decisions about their well-being, health and relationships as well as preparing them for a successful adult life.

Each year the children will cover 3 common themes:

  • Relationships
  • Living in the wider world
  • Health and well-being

The grid below shows the topics we will be covering in Year 5.

Below are statutory spellings for Year 5/6. Each week we will ask you to learn a selection of these words. There are also some spelling strategies to help with learning the words.

Year 5/6 Statutory Spellings

Spelling Strategies

Below are the Year 5 National Curriculum reading objectives. These can be found in the front of your child's reading records. If you notice your child has used one of these whilst reading to you, you can use the code ( found down the side) and write it in their books. This is very helpful to us and it also supports you when hearing your child read.
