Art and Design

Meet our Art and Design co-ordinator, Miss Mills.

Art and Design at Alresford Primary School

At Alresford, we want every pupil to become a confident and competent user of art and design. Our art and design curriculum gives children the opportunity to express their creativity in the highest form. The purpose of our teaching is to engage, inspire and challenge pupils and equip them with the knowledge and skills needed for them to create their own designs and works of art. Children will be given opportunities to develop a deep and critical understanding of art and design, know how art and design has shaped history, and how it contributes to our culture.

Our Aims

All children will be given the opportunity:

  • To know a variety of artists, craft makers and designers and how their art has been shaped by and has influenced our history and culture.
  • To understand how art and design is a creative expression and to feel confident in their individuality through the unique work they produce.
  • To develop skills in a variety of different art, craft and design techniques.
  • To be able to evaluate their work and strive to progress as artists, designers and craft makers.

Art in Action at Alresford

Year 4 have been learning about sculpture in art. They looked at the work of artists who had created sculptures using a range of materials, including the work of Andy Goldsworthy. Inspired by his use of natural resources in his sculptures, the children worked hard to make their own and they looked super!

Year 2 have been working on some fantastic art projects recently, including their work on sculpture. First, they used PlayDoh to practise the skills they would need, such as rolling, shaping, joining and mark making with tools, before applying what they have learnt to their final clay sculptures. Have a look at this project and other art work they have been working on below!
