Year 5 Long Term Plan
PSHE in Year 5
In September 2020 it was made compulsory for all primary age children to be taught Relationships and Health Education. These subjects are designed to equip your child with knowledge to make informed decisions about their well-being, health and relationships as well as preparing them for a successful adult life.
Each year the children will cover 3 common themes:
- Relationships
- Living in the wider world
- Health and well-being
We will be using the SCARF curriculum to explore PSHE this year. Take a look at the document below at what we will be learning about in PSHE in Year 5.
For further information please look at the PSHE curriculum page on our website.

Reading
Each time your child reads at home or is read to – whether it is their school reading book, a comic, an audio book, a favourite bed time story or a chapter book – simply sign or initial their reading log and add the number of minutes they have read.
We would like children to aim for at least 10 minutes of reading a day or 70 minutes a week. Each square is split into 70 minutes. If they don’t complete 70 minutes a week one week, then the minutes they have already accumulated will roll over to the following week.
- Staff will check reading logs once a week.
- They will make a note of how many minutes your child has read.
- For every 70 minutes they will collect a stamp / sticker and the staff member checking will initial it.
- Any additional minutes will ‘roll over’ to the next week.
- If a child finishes a golden ticket board, they can have a new one.
Below are Year 5 reading objectives, vipers skills practised in class and recommended reads for Year 5.
Spelling
Children will be introduced and taught a new spelling rule each week which will then be the focus in class. These spellings will be uploaded on their Spelling Shed accounts so please encourage your child to login and practise their weekly spelling by playing the online games. We do not test the class weekly on their spellings, instead we will be looking for them in their writing to see whether they can use and spell these correctly in context. A new spelling word list will be stuck in to their red spelling books each Monday, which can be taken home to use to practise with as well.
Maths
Reminder - your child can use their Times Table Rockstar logins to practise key times table skills at home.
Another great website is Oxford Owl. It gives ideas for variety of maths activities you could try at home with your child.

PE
This term (Autumn) our PE days are Monday (outdoors) and Friday (indoor). Please ensure that your child comes to school in a PE kit that is suitable for the weather when outdoors. Please also make sure that long hair is tied back on these days and any jewellery is removed. Children will not be able to participate if ear piercings are not removed.
