Music

Meet our Music co-ordinator, Mrs Creber.

Music is a unique way of communicating that can inspire and motivate children. It is a vehicle for personal expression, and it can play an important part in the personal development of people. Music reflects the culture and society we live in, and so the teaching and learning of music enables children to better understand the world they live in. It also plays an important part in helping children to feel part of a community. We provide opportunities for all children to create, play, perform and enjoy music, to develop the skills, to appreciate a wide variety of musical forms, and to begin to make judgements about the quality of music.

 

Our aims in the teaching of music are to:

  • perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians
  • learn to sing and use their voices
  • have the opportunity to learn to play a musical instrument
  • to use technology appropriately
  • to create and compose music on their own and with others
  • understand and explore how music is created

Music has been themed into different units across the year. The objectives from the curriculum map are included in each unit as appropriate.

In EYFS, the children have explored movements and instruments to create a parade for Chinese New Year

In Year 2, the children have been creating, experimenting and selecting sounds to develop question and answer phrases 

Year 3 have begun learning about musical notation

Year 4 have been listening to English composers throughout history.

In Year 5, pupils have created improvisations in response to listening to Holst's Planet Suite
