Maths in Year 2-

We recommend using a number of online resources to support your child's Maths skills at home.  These include Numbots, White Rose 1-Minute Maths and Times Table Rock Stars. For further information please see the parent letter below.

Children's passwords have been sent home but please let us know if you need us to resend these to you.

Reading in Year 2-

In KS1 at Alresford, children read each week with an adult on a 1:1 basis. Our Year 2 reading books are banded and when a child has progressed through them, they become a free reader and can choose books from the library. We also follow VIPERS.

What is VIPERS I hear you ask...

VIPERS is an acronym to aid the recall of the 6 reading domains as part of the UK’s reading curriculum.  They are the key areas which we feel children need to know and understand in order to improve their comprehension of texts.

VIPERS stands for;

  • Vocabulary
  • Inference
  • Prediction
  • Explanation
  • Retrieval
  • Sequence (KS1) or Summarise (KS2)

It is so important that children read regularly at home as well as at school. We really do appreciate your support in this matter. Below are some tips to support your child's reading at home.

Please see below for some great questions to develop your children's comprehension skills linked to our vipers.

Recommended Reads for Year 2-

Spelling and Phonics in Year 2-

Below you will find some ideas to support your child learning their spellings and details of spelling patterns which we will be teaching your child this year.

You will also find two documents containing the Year 2 common exceptions words which your child should be able to spell by the end of the year; the second is the English Appendix, containing all spelling patterns and rules which are taught across the school.

PSHE in Year 2-

We will be using the SCARF curriculum to explore PSHE this year.

Take a look below at what we will be learning about in PSHE in Year 2.

For further information please look at the PSHE curriculum page on our website.

P.E-

In the Spring term our P.E days will be on a Tuesday and Wednesday.  We ask that the children come to school in P.E kit on these days so that they are ready for the activities.  Children must wear a school PE kit not a kit of their choice, please see the school website for details and to order- yourschoolwear.co.uk

On a Tuesday, Miss Mills will teach gymnastics and on a Wednesday we will have a coach to teach hockey.  We will be outside for P.E on a Wednesday so please ensure the children have a warm clothing with them, especially as the weather starts to cool down in the autumn and winter. The health and safety requirement means that earrings have to be taken out completely during any P.E. sessions and cannot be taped up. Once earrings have been in for 6 weeks they are then safe to be removed for a day or for the lesson, please practise with the children so that they can remove their own earrings, or remove them before school on the named P.E days. Please could you also ensure children bring a hairband to tie back their hair if it is shoulder length or longer.
